Mark Twain

Mark Twain, vlastním jménem Samuel Langhorne Clemens, byl americký novinář, spisovatel a humorista. Vyrůstal v Hannibalu v Missouri, které mu později poskytlo předobraz pro dějiště jeho nejznámějších knih Dobrodružství Toma Sawyera a Dobrodružství Huckleberryho Finna. Rodiče se jmenovali John Marshall Clemens a matka Jane Lampton Clemens. Vyučil se tiskařem, pracoval také jako sazeč a přispíval články do novin svého staršího bratra Oriona. V letech 1857–1861 pracoval jako kormidelník na řece Mississippi. Poté se vydal na západ, aby se připojil k Orionovi. V těžbě stříbra neuspěl a tak se obrátil k žurnalistice. Jako novinář napsal humornou povídku Pověstný skákavý žabák z okresu Calaveras, která se stala velmi populární a přitáhla k autorovi pozornost. Dobře přijaty byly také cestopisy. Twain dosáhl velkých úspěchů jako spisovatel a řečník, jeho vtip a satira získaly uznání kritiků a kolegů a stal se přítelem mnoha vlivných osobností. Chyběla mu finanční prozíravost, a ačkoli vydělal knihami a přednáškami hodně peněz, promarnil je v různých podnicích a musel vyhlásit úpadek. S pomocí Henryho Huttlestona Rogerse nakonec své finanční problémy překonal. Mark Twain se narodil čtrnáct dní poté, co se na obloze objevila Halleyova kometa. V roce 1909 řekl: „Přišel jsem na svět s kometou. Za rok se má vrátit a myslím, že s ní opět odejdu. Bylo by to největší zklamání v mém životě, pokud by to tak nebylo.“ Zemřel skutečně během jejího dalšího průletu kolem Země. Samuel Clemens se narodil jako šesté ze sedmi dětí Johna a Jane Clemensových. Pouze tři z jeho sourozenců se dožili dospělosti: nejstarší bratr Orion , Henry a sestra Pamela . Když mu byly čtyři roky, přestěhovala se rodina do městečka Hannibal v Missouri. Město a jeho obyvatelé mu později posloužili jako námět pro několik kni...
