Christopher John \"C. J.\" Sansom je anglický romanopisec a autor detektivek. Narodil se v roce 1952 a vystudoval universitu v Birminghamu, kde získal titul bakaláře svobodných umění a doktora historie . Jak si z námětů, které si pro své napínavé romány vybírá, snadno domyslíme, C. J. Sansom je vášnivým milovníkem dějin – a navíc i právníkem. Vystudoval historii na univerzitě v Birminghamu a po několika letech praxe přidal ještě vzdělání advokáta. Jedenáct let působil jako právník, ale protože ho nepřestávalo lákat psaní, rozhodl se na rok odejít ze zaměstnání a pokusit se prorazit jako spisovatel. A proč si zvolil právě období anglické reformace? „Období vlády Tudorovců bylo jedním z nejdramatičtějších úseků v dějinách Anglie. Jindřich VIII. se rozešel s Římem, prohlásil se hlavou anglikánské církve a náboženské rozpory se mnohdy staly záminkou k bezohlednému boji o vliv a majetek. Napadlo mě, že například kolem rušení klášterů se nepochybně odehrávaly dramatické mocenské konflikty, a protože podobné téma ještě nikdo přede mnou nevyužil, rozhodl jsem se ho zpracovat po svém.“
