Kanadský rodák Sylvain Neuvel vystřídal řadu povolání. Byl novinářem, dekontaminoval půdu, prodával zmrzlinu v Kalifornii a učil v Indii. Jako malý kluk se hrozně toužil stát kosmonautem a dokonce napsal povídku ze světa Star Wars. Coby typický fanoušek sbírá figurky akčních hrdinů a nejcennější kniha v jeho knihovně je román ze světa Battlestar Galacticy s podpisy všech hlavních herců. Spící obři dosud vyšli v 15 jazycích a čtenáři na Goodreads je zařadili mezi šest nejlepších sci-fi knih roku 2016. Sylvain Neuvel pracuje na pokračování a v mezidobí spolu se synem sestavuje repliku R2-D2.
