Britská spisovatelka detektivních románů, dcera venkovského učitele, manželka vášnivého amatérského pozorovatele ptáků a obyvatelka severoanglického hrabství Northumberland, je zkušenou, ostřílenou autorkou – na svém kontě má už dvacet čtyři knihy a čtveřici sérií: v devadesátých letech to byla mimo jiné šestice příběhů inspektora Ramsaye, v prvním desetiletí tohoto století pak takzvaný Shetlandský kvartet, jehož součástí je i román Černý krkavec , ověnčený prestižní Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award. Její knihy vycházejí v šestnácti jazycích, v Německu a Skandinávii dobývají žebříčky bestsellerů. Náměty jejích děl byly adaptovány v britském rozhlase, prodala se rovněž televizní práva na Shetlandský kvartet. Jako první se však britští televizní tvůrci chopili případů vyšetřovatelky Very Stanhopeové. Skryté hlubiny, Stíny vzpomínek a Past na vránu natočili podle námětů stejnojmenných knih v rámci první série v roce 2011 , o rok později začala vznikat druhá série, zahrnující rovněž adaptaci autorčiny detektivky Mlčenlivé hlasy.
