Získal cenu Mail on Sunday/John Llewelllyn Rhys Prize jako nejlepší kniha autora do pětatřiceti let a dostal se i mezi nominované na cenu First Book Award listu Guardian. Další román number9dream následoval v roce 2001 a i jeho kvality byly oceněny nominací na Booker Prize a James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Za román Cloud Atlas získal nominace na Booker Prize, James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Arthur C. Clarke Award a Nebula. V roce 2003 se David Mitchell volbou do Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists zařadil mezi nejlepší britské romanopisce. V nedávné době se vrátil z několikaletého pobytu v Japonsku a nyní žije v Irsku.
