Joanne Rowlingová se narodila roku 1965 v anglickém Gloucestershiru, jejími rodiči jsou laborantka Anne a manažer firmy Rolls Royce Peter. Rowlingová na sebe upozornila už v šesti letech, kdy napsala povídku o králíčkovi Rabbitovi , který měl spalničky. V roce 1971 se její rodina přestěhovala z Yatu do Winterbournu, kde si Joanne a její sestra Di hrály s dětmi ze sousedství na kouzelníky. Jejich nejlepšími přáteli byli v té době Ian Potter a jeho sestřička Vikky. S těmi si užily hodně legrace – Ian měl totiž nevyčerpatelnou zásobu bláznivých nápadů, a tak ani talíře zdobené hlemýždi nebo běhání po čerstvém betonu nebylo pro malou Joanne nic neobvyklého. V roce 1974 se Rowlingovi opět přestěhovali, tentokrát do Tutshillu, poblíž městečka Chepstow . Joanne se v nové škole nelíbilo, možná proto se začala hodně věnovat čtení . Jejím nejlepším kamarádem se zde stal Sean Harris, který byl proslulý tím, že spolužačkám o poledních přestávkách vyprávěl příběhy, a který v určitých věcech nápadně připomíná Rona Weasleyho. Postava Hermiony je do jisté míry jejím autoportrétem . V posledním roce školy se Rowlingová stala „vzornou žákyní“, stala se velkou čtenářkou Jane Austenové a sběratelkou prastarých jmen. Od osmnácti studovala na univerzitě v Exeteru francouzštinu a filologii a během studia strávila rok v Paříži jako asistentka učitele. Koncem devadesátých let krátce pracovala jako úřednice pro Amnesty Internacional, později také jako sekretářka v Manchesteru, práce ji ale příliš nebavila. O poledních pauzách psala v kavárnách a počítač používala k přepisování svých příběhů. Při jedné večerní cestě vlakem z Manchestru do Londýna jí v mysli náhle vytanula podoba Harryho Pottera… Po smrti své matky odjela do portugalského Porta učit angličtinu. Po odpoledních ...
