Jeff VanderMeer

Jeff VanderMeer – Americký autor fantastiky, narozen 7. července 1968 v Bellfontu ve státě Pensylvánie. Dětství strávil na ostrovech Fidži, kde jeho rodiče pracovali ve službách Amerických mírových sborů. Vystudoval novinařinu, anglický jazyk a jako vedlejší obor rovněž latinsko-americkou historii. Dnes žije se svou rodinou v Tallahassee na Floridě. V roce 1984 založil malonákladové vydavatelství The Ministry of Whimsy Press, kde poskytoval prostor umělecky orientované fantastice pro náročného čtenáře. Nakladatelskou činnost ukončil počátkem roku 2005 a nadále se soustřeďuje zejména na vlastní tvorbu. V roce 1992 absolvoval workshop Clarion pro začínající autory fantastiky, ačkoli zde získané vědomosti se dle vlastních slov rozhodl spíše nevyužívat. Rovněž je uznávaným literárním kritikem a publicistou, mimo jiné je redaktorem internetového portálu Fantastic Metropolis. První práci Night Prayers publikoval v magazínu Ouroboros, poté následoval prodej básně Four Theories of Earth-Moon System Formation v magazínu Amazing a vstup do řad profesionálně vydávaných autorů povídkou Mahout v magazínu Asimov‚s SF. Některé rané věci shrnul v souboru The Book of Lost Places . Ještě předtím vydal krátký výčet humorných poznámek o žabách shrnutý pod titulem The Book of Frog , jenž v sobě spojuje vtipný nadhled s fantastickými motivy. Z občasně psané poezie lze uvést báseň Flight Is For Those Who Have Not Yet Crossed Over , která byla vedle dalších básní a spolu s několika povídkami shrnuta ve sbírce The Day Dali Died . Povídky publikoval zprvu ve velkém množství méně známých periodik, první úspěch se dostavil až po vydání titulu The Bone-Carver‘s Tale . Ovšem větší pozornosti se mu dostalo až po samotném vydání novely Dradin, in Love , kterou vyjádřil důrazný obrat směrem k temně laděným surrealistickým vizím.
