Britská spisovatelka detektivních románů, dcera venkovského učitele, manželka vášnivého amatérského pozorovatele ptáků a obyvatelka severoanglického hrabství Northumberland, je zkušenou, ostřílenou autorkou – na svém kontě má už dvacet čtyři knihy a čtveřici sérií: v devadesátých letech to byla mimo jiné šestice příběhů inspektora Ramsaye, v prvním desetiletí tohoto století pak takzvaný Shetlandský kvartet, jehož součástí je i román Černý krkavec , ověnčený prestižní Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award.
