Emily Brontë

Emily Jane Brontëová byla anglická spisovatelka. Emily se narodila v Thorntonu v Yorkshiru Patricku Brontëovi a Marii Branwellové jako páté z jejich šesti dětí. Jejími sourozenci byli Charlotte Brontëová, Anne Brontëová a Patrick Branwell Brontë. Roku 1824 se rodina přestěhovala do Haworthu, kde získal otec Emily stálé místo vikáře. Toto prostředí mělo klíčový význam při vytváření zvláštního literárního světa sourozenců Brontëových. V dětství, po smrti své matky, si tři sestry a jejich bratr vymysleli fiktivní země , které se pak objevovali v jejich příbězích. Z tohoto období se nedochvalo téměř nic z prací Emily Brontëové, výjimku tvoří několik básní. Roku 1842 začala Emily pracovat jako vychovatelka v Miss Patchett\'s Ladies Academy v Law Hill Hall, nedaleko Halifaxu. Později se sestrou Charlotte navštěvovaly také soukromou školu v Bruselu. Doma si pak založily vlastní školu, ale neměly žádné žáky. Objevení básnického talentu Emily vedlo ji a její sestry Charlotte a Anne roku 1846 k vydání společné sbírky jejich básní. Chtěly se však vyhnout předsudkům, které by v polovině 19. století ženské autorky vyvolaly, proto zvolily pseudonymy skrývající jejich pohlaví. Ponechaly si jen své iniciály: Charlotte se stala Currer Bell, Anne Acton Bell a Emily Ellis Bell. Roku 1847 vydala Emily svůj jediný román Na Větrné hůrce jako dva svazky trojdílného souboru . Inovační struktura románu poněkud zmátla kritiky. I když při svém prvním vydání kniha vyvolala smíšené reakce, později se zařadila mezi klasická díla anglické literatury. Roku 1850 vydala Charlotte Na Větrné hůrce znovu, tentokrát jako samostatný román pod skutečným jménem Emily Brontëová. Stejně jako její sestry měla i Emily zdraví oslabené drsným podnebím doma a ve škole. Během pohřbu svého bratra v září roku 1848 proch...
