Janet Evanovich, rodným jménem Janet Schneider, se narodila 22. dubna 1943 v South River, New Jersey. Svou kariéru začala psaním krátkých romantických povídek pod pseudonymem Stefiie Hall, ale proslavila se řadou knih o Stephanii Plum, nákupčí spodního prádla z Trentonu, New Jersey, která se stává lovkyní lidí, poté, co přišla o zaměstnání. Šestnáct románů z této řady se dostalo do seznamu bestsellerů The New York Times. Janet se narodila a vyrůstala v New Jersey jako dcera strojníka a ženy v domácnosti. Po absolvování střední školy se Evanovichová jako první z rodiny dostala na vysokou školu - studovala umění na Douglass College, Univerzita Rutgers. Po porodu se rozhodla stát se ženou v domácnosti jako její matka. Ve svých třiceti letech začala psát romány. Začala brát lekce improvizovaného herectví, aby se zdokonalila v psaní dialogů. Po čase začala psát románky pro ženy. Dva z nich posléze předložila k publikování. Přesto se jí nepodařilo najít vydavatele. V té době přestala psát a podepsala smlouvu s pracovní agenturou. Několik měsíců po začátku práce dostala nabídku a prodala svůj román za - pro ni obrovskou částku - 2000 dolarů. Evanovich žije v New Hampshire a na Floridě se svým manželem Petem, kterého si vzala v roce 1964. Členové rodiny jsou zaměstnáni v její společnosti Evanovich Inc, včetně jejího manžela Peta, syn Petera, dcery Alexandry a zetě PJ Hellera.
