Jiří Kulhánek

Jiří Kulhánek je přední český autor knih na pomezí science fiction a fantasy. Narodil se 31. prosince 1967 v Brandýse nad Labem, nyní žije v Praze. V roce 1989 absolvoval SPŠS v Liberci. Od roku 1993 člen SF&F Workshopu. Je patrně nejprodávanějším současným domácím autorem žánru, populárním i mimo okruh pravidelných čtenářů fantastiky a pobírajícím honoráře srovnatelné s úspěšnými autory mainstreamu. V roce 1996 získal cenu Akademie science fiction, fantasy a hororu pro nadějného nováčka. Mezi fanoušky je už poměrně proslulý tím, že nerad vystupuje na veřejnosti, rozhovory dává jen zřídka a odpovídá stručně. Je svobodný, žije v Praze. Hrdinové jeho knih mají mimořádné až nadlidské schopnosti ; obvykle jsou na počátku napadeni a stráví velkou část děje útěkem a skrýváním před masami „normálních“ nepřátel, jejichž nebezpečnost spočívá v kvantitě, ale nakonec triumfují i nad jejich skrytými vůdci, což je několik málo zloduchů ještě supermanštějších než hrdinové. Další charakteristické znaky Kulhánkova díla jsou spádný děj, černý až cynický humor koncentrovaný ve formě tzv. wisecracků , detailní popisy vyspělé techniky , s jejíž pomocí hrdina řeší různé problémy, a hojná naturalistická, i když odlehčená líčení násilí. Kulhánkovi hrdinové představují sice kladnou stranu konfliktu, ale jsou ztělesněním opaku čítankové ušlechtilosti a často se dopouštějí i morálně pochybných skutků. Určité nedostatky knih lze spatřovat v poněkud jednodušším jazyce a relativně častých logických nesrovnalostech. Kulhánkův styl bývá přirovnáván ke Quentinu Tarantinovi. Je často napodobován, ale zpravidla nepříliš zdařile. Od roku 1993 člen SF&F Workshopu. Z jeho díla uveďme zejména romány Vládci strachu a Cesta krve I – Dobrák , která získala cenu Akademie science fiction, fantasy a hororu za nejlepší původní knihu roku. Tatáž cena pak byla o rok pozdě...
