By the time Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had completed the twelve stories for The Strand Magazine that are gathered together in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, he was already growing tired of his most famous creation, but the financial incentive to continue was too great. So began the second series of stories, known as Th…e Memoirs; these introduced such notable characters as Holmes' indolent brother, Mycroft, and Holmes' most dangerous adversary, Professor James Moriarty, the 'Napoleon of Crime'. The collection included such stories as 'The Adventure of the Resident Patient' and 'The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter', which Doyle would list later as amongst his favourites. It was to Moriarty that was delegated the task of ending the career of the world's finest consulting detective in a final, fatal encounter at The Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland in the concluding tale, 'The Final Problem'. Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle byl britský spisovatel proslulý především příběhy o Sherlocku Holmesovi, jež zásadně ovlivnily podobu detektivního žánru. Původním povoláním byl lékař. Tvorba tohoto velmi plodného autora zahrnuje kromě detektivek také historické a fantastické povídky a romány, dramata, poezii i literaturu faktu. Působil rovněž jako válečný zpravodaj. Byl aktivní v politice – kandidoval do parlamentu, zasazoval se o dodržování práva v případech protiprávně odsouzených, vystoupil proti nelidským podmínkám v belgickém Kongu a organizoval mezinárodní podporu pro jejich zlepšení, veřejně hájil zájmy Velké Británie ve válečných konfliktech nebo prosazoval projekt vybudování tunelu pod Lamanšským průlivem. Věnoval se sportu, byl jedním z prvních automobilistů ve Velké Británii a propagoval začínající lyžování. V závěru života se zaměřil na šíření spiritismu. Arthur Conan Doyle se narodil ve skotském Edinburghu 22. května 1859 v katolické rodině. Rodiče, Angličan Charles Altamont Doyle a Irka Mary Foleyová, byli oddáni v roce 1855. Měli celkem deset dětí, z nichž se sedm dožilo dospělosti. Otec Charles, státní úředník, měl malířské nadání, které zdědil po svém otci Johnovi. Také tři starší bratři Charlese měli umělecké sklony. Příjmení Conan, které začal Arthur Doyle užívat později, pochází od prastrýce Michaela Conana, bratra babičky z otcovy strany, který byl Arthurovým kmotrem. Rodiče poslali devítiletého Arthura v roce 1868 do jezuitské internátní školy Stonyhurst v Anglii. Po jejím ukončení v roce 1875 odjel na rok na jezuitskou kolej do Feldkirchu v Rakousku. V roce 1876 začal studovat medicínu na Edinburské univerzitě. Během studií začal psát – v roce 1879 vyšla v magazínu Chambers's Edinburgh Journal jeho první povídka The Mystery of Sasassa Valley. A.
