Daniel Defoe

Daniel Defoe byl anglický spisovatel a novinář, představitel myšlenkového proudu osvícenství. Narodil se kolem roku 1660 jako syn Jamese Foea a Alice Foe, jeho jméno však není zapsáno v matrice ani nikde jinde. Jeho otec byl londýnským obchodníkem, svíčkařem a členem Butcher's Company . Měl o rok starší sestru Elizabeth, v deseti letech mu zemřela matka. Na svůj prostý původ nebyl Daniel příliš hrdý a vyřešil to tím, že si ke svému jménu začal ke konci 90. let 17. století přidávat aristokraticky znějící "De", tuto opravenou podobu jména lze najít různě zapsanou . Později tvrdil, že je spřízněný s šlechtickým rodem De Beau Faux. Roku 1684 se oženil s Mary Tuffleyovou a měli spolu dva syny a pět dcer. Za své dílo The Shortest Way with the Dissenters, vydané roku 1702, byl roku 1703 vězněn a propuštěn o pět měsíců později díky Robertu Hurleymu. V roce 1704 začal vydávat časopis The Review, který byl vydáván nejdéle z jeho 27 periodik, až do roku 1713. Za ironický pamflet navrhující řešení konfliktu mezi státní, anglikánskou církví a puritány byl odsouzen na pranýř, poté byl získán do státní služby. Jako tajný agent připravoval v roce 1707 sjednocení parlamentů Anglie a Skotska. Jeho nejslavnější román Robinson Crusoe, vydaný roku 1719, vypráví o synovi z kupecké rodiny, který uteče na moře, aby se stal námořníkem. Je zajat piráty a upadne do otroctví, následně spolu s dalším otrokem utíká po moři. Nakonec ztroskotá a žije mnoho let sám na pustém ostrově. Kniha je založena na skutečném příběhu námořníka Selkirka. Jedná se tak o jeden z prvních románů s realistickými prvky. Defoe v něm mimo jiné sleduje vývojově hledání Robinsonovy cesty k Bohu a formování jeho mravních vlastností a vytváří typ svobodného jedince ztělesňujícího morálku „bílého muže“.
