Řadu let přednášel na Institutu pro vzdělávání jazyk Angličtina na Lancaster University ve Velké Británii.. Kromě psaní učebnic, mezi Tomovy zájmy patří řízení změn, rozvoj učitelů, výuka gramatiky. Ve svém volném čase hraje golf, rád se dívá na fotbal a filmy a hraje na elektrickou kytaru.
