Benjamin Black

Prozaik John Banville se narodil v roce 1945 ve Wexfordu na jihovýchodě Irska. Vstoupil na literární scénu v roce 1970 povídkovou sbírkou Dlouhý Lankin. Většinu svého života strávil v Dublinu, kde od roku 1989 působí v redakci listu The Irish Times. Banvillovy kritikou i čtenáři ceněné romány se pyšní množstvím prestižních cen. Za knihu Doctor Copernicus získal literární cenu James Tait Black Memorial Prize v roce 1976. Román Kepler získal cenu deníku The Guardian v roce 1981. Román Moře, v češtině vydaný v roce 2006, vynesl Banvillovi v roce 2005 Booker Prize, o rok později Irish Book Awards. V roce 2011 obdržel Banville Mezinárodní literární cenu Franze Kafky. Detektivní romány z Dublinu padesátých let 20. století píše pod pseudonymem Benjamin Black. Pod tímto pseudonymem píše detektivky, které dokonalou psychologií postav, stylistickým mistrovstvím i myšlenkovou hloubkou výrazně přesahují hranice žánru .
