Eva Ibbotson

Eva Ibbotson žije ve městě Newcastle na řece Tyne už mnoho let. Bydlí v pěkném řadovém domku, přecpaném obrazy a fotkami. Narodila se v r. 1925 ve Vídni a v roce 1933 se přestěhovala do Edinburghu se svým otcem Bertholdem Wiesnerem, výtečným fyziologem, který dostal práci na Edinburghské univerzitě. Otec byl průkopníkem lidského umělého oplodnění a někdy se uchyloval ke svým vlastním zdrojům, když dárci nebyli zrovna k mání. V roce 1934 přicestovala do Británie i Evina zbožňovaná matka Anna Gmeyner, charizmatická a krásná židovská spisovatelka, která pracovala s Brechtem a psala filmové scénáře pro Pabsta. Po rozvodu s Eviným otcem založila Anna novou rodinu a se svým druhým manželem, ruským filosofem aristokratického původu, se usadila v Londýně. Evin otec se časem začal zajímat o mimosmyslové vnímání, které studoval spolu s cambridgským psychologem R. H. Thoulessem. Po vzoru otce se Eva rozhodla studovat fyziologii, což byla z akademického hlediska chyba. Pokusy na živých zvířatech jí působily muka a výsledky jejích vědeckých pokusů byly dle jejích vlastních slov „zvláštní“. Její spolužák ze studií Alan Ibbotson, který se stal později ekologem, usoudil, že pro vědu bude menším zlem, když Evu pojme za manželku a nechá ji doma, aby se starala o rodinu. Což byl začátek šťastného manželství, z něhož se narodily čtyři děti a které trvalo 49 let – do roku 1998, kdy Alan Ibbotson zemřel na infarkt.
