Linwood Barclay se narodil ve Spojených státech, ale vyrůstal v Kanadě. Jeho otec byl komerční umělec. Linwood Barclay získal B.A. Hons v angličtině na Trent University v Ontariu. Začal svou kariéru v žurnalistice v Examiner Peterborough v Ontariu. V roce 1981 nastoupil do Toronto Star.
